Jan. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The
United Steelworkers (USW) today issued the following statement on behalf of District 4 Director
John Shinn in response to N.Y. Gov.
Andrew M. Cuomo's State of the State address, which emphasized the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Sandy. The Governor had distributed the 312 page report from the NYS 2100 Commission's study on how to best prepare
New York for storms like Hurricane Sandy in the future:
"The USW is gratified to see Gov. Cuomo's determined leadership to act so quickly on the 2100 Commission recommendations. He is demonstrating to the nation that great things can be accomplished quickly if we work together."
"It was a pleasure to serve on this diverse commission as a representative from the labor movement. I believe this is an exceptional report which provides important guidance and direction on how to rebuild the damaged areas of
New York in a smart, safe and responsible way. The report also demonstrates how it is possible to build an infrastructure and transportation system designed for the 21st century."
"I am proud of the fact that my fellow commissioners recognized this major opportunity to provide a much-needed boost to
New York's economy and benefit the entire nation by including strong Buy American provisions as outlined in the 2009 Recovery Act. These provisions will support job growth for local, state and national companies in various manufacturing, transportation and construction industries along with their suppliers."
The USW is
North America's largest industrial union, representing 850,000 workers in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries.
