CES: Samsung Touts TVs, Takes Shot at Apple

Stocks in this article: AAPL

LAS VEGAS ( TheStreet) -- Samsung really put on a brilliant show at the International Consumer Electronics Show this year, with a clear focus on Apple (AAPL), particularly with regard to televisions.

Unveiling its 2013 television lineup, Samsung's new television sets are not only stunningly beautiful, but allow for more connectivity and interaction with the devices than ever before. Samsung Smart TV provides more interaction with the content and partners than any other TVs.

The new Samsung flagship F8000 television is a sight to behold, with its LED screen and incredibly beautiful picture. It comes in sizes between 46 inches and 75 inches, and employs a feature called Intelligent Viewing to help the consumer make better choices when searching for content. It's truly a remarkable device.

The F8000 is the first television to use a quad core processor, allowing nearly seamless transition switching between television, apps, Internet and social networking. It also comes with S-recommendation, Samsung's voice navigation assistant. "Samsung's Smart Hub will change the way you discover content," said Tim Baxter, Samsung's President of the Americas.

Samsung clearly had Apple on the brain, as Baxter mentioned Samsung shipped 66 million connected devices during the last quarter, 40% more than its nearest competitor (clearly a jab at Apple). Samsung's clearly stepping up its television game for 2013, unveiling a 2013 evolution kit, which it believes will revolutionize television. It allows TVs from 2012 and later to be upgraded to the newest software, without having to buy a new TV every year.

Michael Abary, a Samsung Senior Vice President, also took a shot at Apple, saying the Samsung Galaxy S III is the world's best selling smartphone, with over 30 million units sold-to-date. Apple has sold more than 5 million iPhone 5s in the United States, and more than 2 million in China. Apple will announce quarterly results Jan. 23.

What really took my breath away, though, were the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TVs with built-in speaker systems that look like a work of art. These TVs come in Ultra HD, and are poised to change the way people watch television in the future.

With rumors constantly swirling about an Apple television, Samsung has made a incredibly bold and powerful move in the smart TV segment. It's your move Apple, if you want it.
