CES: TI Pushes Pico Projector Chip
NEW YORK (TheStreet) - These little processing chips may be small in size but they could herald the next giant step for personal computing.
Today, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Texas Instruments' (TXN) DLP (Digital Light Projection) division announced a new pico projector chip that improves on everything the processor can do.
The chip maker calls this new breakthrough architecture "TRP", which stands for "Tilt and Roll Pixel". What it's claiming is that the chip will allow these teeny video projectors to throw an image which is up to 30% brighter than previous chips - with twice the resolution - while consuming up to 50% less power.
What this means is that enhanced little projectors can be built into laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras, camcorders and even eyewear.
Your next smartphone might even be able to project an image on a nearby wall while a second projector might project a virtual keyboard on a table. That would turn your smartphone into a fully functioning portable computing system which will fit in your pocket. Think in terms of an upgraded Samsung Galaxy Beam, with pico projectors top and bottom. Amazing stuff. Texas Instruments hasn't said when we'll see these new projector chips in devices - but will be previewing units at CES this week.
