CES Preview: Samsung's Super TV, Intel's Subscription-TV Service

Stock quotes in this article: INTC, GOOG

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- As we get closer to the start of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, we're starting to see more rumors about blockbuster announcements.

Such as the somewhat vague teaser from Samsung about a new, super-duper television set the company will be introducing in Las Vegas.

As part of the Samsung Tomorrow blog post, the company is flaunting an interesting-looking, almost see-through television monitor Samsung will be telling us more about in the next few days.

The included Korean text isn't much help in explaining what's in the photo. Neither is the instant translation of the "notice is the design of real innovation [CES 2013] TV" page as offered by my Web browser:

"New TV did not exist in the existing molding and over time, the do not change, Timeless Gallery Timeless gallery foretell."

But what is obvious from the illustration is that the TV seems to be more vertical than horizontal. More like a tablet computer than a wide-screen monitor.

Samsung is really excited about the new TV. So much so that it has created a teaser video.

And it looks like Intel will have some interesting new TV news coming from CES as well. According to TechCrunch, after a number of disappointing partnerships, Intel (INTC) reportedly will be introducing its own branded set-top box and a cable TV service to go along with it.

The story quotes industry insiders who are saying Intel is determined to get its semiconductor chips into American living rooms. After the company's less-than-satisfactory experience with providing processors for Google (GOOG) TV boxes and seeing what the competition has come up with, Intel is now determined to "do it right."

Intel will reportedly announce both a set-top box and subscription-TV service for people who appreciate streaming TV services but don't want to cut themselves off from some cable content such as sporting events.

We'll know soon enough. CES begins Jan. 8.
