Congressional Stop DUI Caucus in Attendance as Traffic Safety Professionals Received First Annual Kevin E. Quinlan Awards for Excellence in Traffic Safety

The Century Council announced the inaugural Kevin E. Quinlan Awards for Excellence in Traffic Safety. Kevin Quinlan was a traffic safety pioneer and mentor who passed away in December 2008. His work as Chief of the NTSB's Safety Advocacy Division was instrumental in promoting state action on NTSB Safety Recommendations to reduce fatalities, injuries, and crashes in all modes of transportation. His expert testimony led to the passage of many effective traffic safety countermeasures across this nation.  National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind and numerous NTSB staff attended today's event. The following individuals received the award for their commitment to advancing the cause of saving lives and preventing injuries on our nation's highways:
  • Jonathan Adkins, Deputy Executive Director and Communications Director, Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)
  • Lowell Porter, National Law Enforcement Liaison, Governors Highway Safety Association
  • Sandy Spavone, Executive Director, National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS)
  • The Hon. Richard Vlavianos, Presiding Judge, San Joaquin Superior Court Comprehensive DUI Program
  • Jim Tymon, Dan Veoni, and Jim Kolb, U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee
  • Anna Laitin, Christian Fjeld, Rebecca Hooks, Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee

Quinlan was the Chief of the Safety Advocacy Division of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).  Mr. Quinlan was with the Safety Board for nearly 20 years, serving as the Alcohol and Drug Program Coordinator and Chief of the Safety Recommendations Division.  He was instrumental in promoting state action on Safety Board recommendations to reduce fatalities, injuries, and crashes in all modes of transportation.  Mr. Quinlan authored five major studies for the Board.  Kevin was a mentor to countless traffic safety advocates and an inspiration to the thousands of people who lost loved ones.   His expert testimony led to the passage of many effective traffic safety countermeasures across this nation.
