Throughout the day, 5.2 million shares of Kinder Morgan exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 5.5 million shares. The stock ranged in a price between $33.02-$34.13 after having opened the day at $33.50 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $33.76. Other companies within the Basic Materials sector that increased today were: Andatee China Marine Fuel Services Corporat ( AMCF), up 17.2%, Gulfport Energy Corporation ( GPOR), up 16.1%, New Concept Energy ( GBR), up 13.4%, and James River Coal Company ( JRCC), up 11.5%.

Kinder Morgan, Inc. owns and operates energy transportation and storage assets in the United States and Canada. The company operates in six segments: Products Pipelines-KMP, Natural Gas Pipelines KMP, CO2 KMP, Terminals KMP, Kinder Morgan Canada KMP, and NGPL PipeCo LLC. Kinder Morgan has a market cap of $34.93 billion and is part of the energy industry. The company has a P/E ratio of 66, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are up 4.7% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday. Currently there are six analysts that rate Kinder Morgan a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and three rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Kinder Morgan as a sell. The company's weaknesses can be seen in multiple areas, such as its generally high debt management risk and disappointing return on equity.

On the negative front, GeoGlobal Resources ( GGR), down 11%, Kingold Jewelry ( KGJI), down 7.8%, China Shen Zhou Mining & Resources ( SHZ), down 7.8%, and Crosshair Energy ( CXZ), down 7.7%, were all laggards within the basic materials sector with Ultra Petroleum Corporation ( UPL) being today's basic materials sector laggard.
