Healthways (Nasdaq: HWAY) today announced it has extended its current contract offering its nationally acclaimed SilverSneakers
Fitness Program to eligible Independence Blue Cross (IBC) members. SilverSneakers will continue to be offered to eligible IBC members in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and members of IBC affiliate AmeriHealth HMO in Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, SilverSneakers will be available to IBC Medicare eligible members enrolled in Personal Choice 65 PPO, Keystone 65 Preferred HMO, and Keystone 65 Select HMO. In New Jersey, AmeriHealth 65 Preferred HMO plans will offer SilverSneakers.
SilverSneakers, the nation’s leading exercise program designed to keep older adults active and healthy, has partnered with IBC since 2008.
Using proven methodologies based upon more than 16 years of science and outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity in older adults, resulting in higher well-being and lower healthcare costs. Physical activity can reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases, may relieve symptoms of depression, helps to maintain independent living, and enhances overall quality of life.
Strength training is recommended as part of a comprehensive physical activity program among older adults and may help to improve balance and decrease risk of falls.
SilverSneakers engages participants in more frequent strength training, aerobic, and flexibility exercise through access to a variety of venues and programming designed specifically for older adults that also incorporates social experiences.
“The Independence Blue Cross value proposition calls for exceeding customers’ expectations through the provision of innovative health and wellness solutions. By offering SilverSneakers to their older adult members, IBC is demonstrating their commitment to an innovative solution designed to promote greater health and well-being,” said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president and chief executive officer. “Healthways is proud to further our partnership with IBC to improve member quality of life through a program that is both highly rewarding and enjoyable.”
