NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- What's happening in small business today?
1. Not everyone thought Small Business Saturday was a success. Early reports are coming in from New York to California that small businesses saw a jump in sales this past Saturday, according to The Washington Post.
But a handful of stores didn't have the same experience, and it sounds like part of the problem is there is still work to do when it comes to promotion.
According to Naples Daily News, area business owners said they didn't see a bump in customer traffic on Saturday any more than normal for the holiday weekend.Local business associations didn't heavily promote the event, the article says. The shops that did participate did so largely through self-promotion. Small businesses in parts of Northern California focused instead on promoting shopping "small" for the entire holiday season, the Times-Standard said. In Augusta, Ga., some small-business owners chalked up slow sales to the Georgia-Georgia Tech football game -- and lack of awareness. 2. Use social media to spur holiday shopping, but don't limit your business to Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. GrowSmartBusiness' Rieva Lesonsky shares the staggering findings of a recent survey in which 62% of respondents said they regularly use social media to get gift ideas. And while Facebook (FB), Pinterest and Twitter might be the obvious choices, it also included online reviews and wish lists shared by friends and family. "While consumers are doing a lot of research before they buy gifts this year, more than one-third (37%) report that they rely equally on online and in-store research before committing to a purchase," the article says. 3. Capriotti's arms franchisees with iPads. New franchisees at Capriotti's Sandwich Shop will now be high-tech. The franchise is giving franchisees Apple (AAPL) iPads as part of its franchisee training program to use leading up to opening day as well as in daily operations. Capriotti's will load each iPad with tools and apps best needed by franchisees, including digital manuals, operations, recipes and the ability to connect with suppliers and access the company intranet, according to QSR Magazine . -- Written by Laurie Kulikowski in New York.
