Israel Escalates Air Attacks on Gaza
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Israel stepped up its air attacks on Gaza Saturday, destroying the headquarters of the Hamas prime minister, according to published media reports.
By hitting those headquarters, as well as police and security buildings, Israel expanded its assault on Gaza to civilian sites, The New York Times noted.
Amid the attacks, Hamas continued to fire rockets at Israel, the Times reported. One pair of rockets was targeted at Tel Aviv, but one landed harmlessly, and the other was hit in the air, the newspaper said.
The current assault on Gaza began Wednesday. Israel, which is preparing for a possible ground invasion, says its air attacks are intended to stop recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns by Gaza militants.
In Cairo, Egypt, leaders of Hamas, which governs Gaza; Turkey; and Qatar tried to work out a peace treaty, but the talks were reported to be deadlocked Saturday evening, the Times said. A representative for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces had targeted Hamas government buildings because Hamas has used civilian infrastructure to hide military operations, the Times also reported. > > Bull or Bear?
