Troopers To Offer Free Child Safety Seat Inspections Statewide

State Police Participating in National "Click It or Ticket" Campaign

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania State Police will offer free child safety seat inspections statewide in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Click It or Ticket" campaign from Nov. 19 to Dec. 2.

"Vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death, with most fatalities being attributed to unbelted motorists," State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said.

"With heavy traffic expected for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, it's crucial that we encourage drivers now to make sure that all passengers are properly restrained whenever they travel," Noonan said.

During the campaign period, troopers will conduct traffic safety checkpoints to educate the public about traffic laws, focusing enforcement efforts in areas with traditionally high numbers of crashes.

Troopers conducting inspections will demonstrate how to correctly install and use child safety seats.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the state's current seat belt usage rate is slightly under 84 percent.

"Again this year, I'm directing our troopers to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward violations of the state's seat belt and child passenger restraint laws during this campaign period," Noonan said. "However, no enforcement will be taken against anyone at the free safety seat inspection sites if the seat is found to be incorrectly installed."

Information about inspection locations is available by calling any state police station or by visiting the state police website at www.psp.state.pa.us; look for the "Click it or Ticket" logo on the main page.
