Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of Florida’s leading health and well-being companies, distributed more than $35 million to physicians across the state who participated in the Humana Provider Quality Rewards Program in 2011, the program’s second year.
Close to 900 physician practices in Florida received payments from Humana in recognition of outcome and performance improvements made by their practices last year for their patients who are Humana Medicare Advantage health plan members. Some $22.6 million went to primary care physicians in South Florida, while participating doctors in Central and North Florida received more than $7.5 million in quality incentives from Humana. In addition, Humana paid nearly $4 million in quality bonuses during 2011 to vision providers.
In 2011, Humana distributed nearly $20 million to physician practices across Florida under the program for 2010 performance improvement results.
The $35 million-plus in quality incentives for Florida primary care doctors also included $1.5 million in provider quality rewards to physicians, distributed by CarePlus Health Plans, a Florida Medicare Advantage HMO owned by Humana. Some 1,600 primary care physicians participated in CarePlus’ Quality Rewards Program last year.“The Humana Provider Quality Rewards Program keeps improving outcomes and driving efficiencies across a growing number of our Medicare Advantage members,” said Renee Buckingham, Vice President of Provider Engagement at Humana. “More and more Florida doctors continue to relay their positive feedback to us about the value that our program brings to their patients. Humana is excited to once again recognize and reward these physicians for helping members achieve well-being by focusing on enabling greater quality of life and improved health outcomes.” Humana and CarePlus payments to physician practices are based on the practices’ quality improvements in nine National Committee for Quality Assurance ( NCQA ) preventive and chronic-condition management areas. They are:
- Breast cancer screening
- Glaucoma screening
- Colorectal cancer screening
- Cholesterol screening
- Diabetes management
- Osteoporosis medication management
- Body Mass Index
- Diabetes Treatment Management
- Anti-rheumatic drugs for patients with rheumatoid arthritis
