Petraeus Resignation Followed FBI Probe Into Email: Reports
WASHINGTON (TheStreet) -- Former CIA Director David Petraeus' resignation Friday over an extramarital affair followed an FBI probe into whether another person was using his Gmail account, according to published media reports.
The FBI came to believe that the woman with whom he was having the affair -- or someone she knew -- had tried to gain access to Petraeus' email account, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous sources briefed on the matter.
Fox News also reported it had learned of the FBI probe into the CIA chief's email.
The woman has been identified as Petraeus' biographer.
Petraeus resigned Friday afternoon, saying he had showed "extremely poor judgment" by conducting an extramarital affair. The resignation was a sudden fall from grace for Petraeus, a former four-star general who had commanded U.S. forces in Afghanistan starting in June 2010 and became director of the CIA, with unanimous Senate approval, in September 2011. > > Bull or Bear?
