United Shuts Down at JFK and LGA as Storms to Slam New York

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- (TheStreet) -- Just days after restoring service to the New York region in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, airlines are pulling back again due to another winter storm.

FlightAware.com said that 1,199 flights had been cancelled as of midday Wednesday. Analysts said airlines lost about $200 million due to Sandy's impact.

United (UAL) said it will suspend most New York area service between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday.

"Weather conditions will likely cause additional delays and cancellations at other northeast airports," the carrier said.

At its Newark hub, between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday, United intends to operate long-haul international flights and flights involving its other hubs. It will suspend most of its remaining services. At Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, United intends to suspend all flights between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday.

The carrier said it will waive change fees for passengers with flights between Nov. 6 and Nov. 8 in New York and five other cities: Allentown, Pa.; Hartford, Conn.; Manchester, N.H.; Philadelphia and White Plains, N.Y.

American (AAMRQ.PK) said it would halt flying at noon Wednesday in Philadelphia and at 3 p.m. EST Wednesday at the New York airports. Operations are expected to restart Thursday morning. America is waiving change fees Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 for travel involving Hartford, Philadelphia and White Plains as well as New York.

US Airways (LCC) has begun to cancel flights at LaGuardia and New York Kennedy, with 210 flights cancelled so far. It said cancellations are likely to increase as airports implement ground delay programs that enable more spacing between flights US Airways has waived change fees Wednesday and Thursday for the three New York airports, three Baltimore/Washington airports, two Connecticut airports, Boston, Philadelphia and six other airports.

JetBlue (JBLU) and Delta (DAL) said they will cancel select flights and have waived change fees. The JetBlue cancellations involve New York area, Washington area, Boston, and six other cities as far south as Richmond, Va.
