Welcome to Side Street

I'm going to tell you a couple of things and I want you pay very close attention...

First, James Cramer and invented the financial web. Invented, as in It wasn't there before they put it there. My first job on Wall Street was an internship in the late 1990's. Barry and Freddy who ran the brokerage firm had me xerox copies of the Wall Street Journal's C Section and hand them out to all the brokers in the bullpen. He'd also have me print a copy of Cramer's brand new column at TheStreet and make photocopies of that as well. A curious thing began to happen -- when I handed the brokers their daily Wall Street Journal digest printout, they started asking "Where's the Cramer stuff?"

They were addicted.

They read the Journal but they absorbed Jimmy's stuff. For the first time ever they felt like one of them was doing the talking, and the degree to which it resonated cannot be overemphasized. And then Gary B. Smith and Dougie and Aaron and Herb and Lashinsky came along and TheStreet quickly became what I have called the Motown of the Financial Web. It all started with TheStreet and almost every great writer who's ever covered the market has been through there.

TheStreet was the very first outlet to give experienced market participants an equal footing with the journalists, a spotlight in which to make their points and share their hard-earned wisdom.

And then time went by and a million competing sites and TV channels and social media platforms sprung up to compete. Which is fine, it allowed for evolution and a ridiculously rich environment for the development of new talent. Think of all the sensational bloggers who grew up on TheStreet and who were originally inspired by it! I flatter myself in thinking that I'm a pretty good case in point. My subscription to Real Money Silver and Jim's first book Confessions of a Street Addict were two of the most elemental building blocks of my early education. And when anyone asks me what my blueprint was to begin writing about markets and finance, TheStreet comes out within my very first gasp.

And so today, with the launch of Side Street, I honor that legacy and influence with a page that I believe has the potential to help TheStreet reach the next generation of readers, traders and investors. The mission is a simple one: I'll be curating the very best of what my fellow independent bloggers have to say and bringing it here for one of the most sophisticated audiences anywhere on the web.

To be able to do this on a stage as august and respected as this one is a dream come true, the 19 year-old me is pinching himself at the opportunity. And so I hope that you will find value in the bloggers and ideas I bring to your attention each day here at Side Street. I hope that I can add a new chapter to the storied history of TheStreet and open your eyes to writers and investing insights that are both fresh and informative.

I give you my word that if you add Side Street to your daily routine, my team and I will not let you down. Welcome to a new era at, welcome to Side Street!
