Stock Futures Sink on Fiscal Cliff Worries

Gold for December delivery was rising $3.90 to $1,718.90 an ounce at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, while December crude oil contracts were down $1.40 at $87.31 a barrel.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury was gaining 31/32, diluting the yield to 1.647%. The dollar was rising 0.33%, according to the U.S. dollar index .

In corporate news, Time Warner (TWX) posted third-quarter earnings of 86 cents a share, beating estimates by 4 cents, though revenue came in at $6.84 billion, below the average analyst estimate of $6.9 billion, as strength at the media giant's cable networks was balanced by weakness at the company's film and TV entertainment business.

Shares were down 0.26%.

WellPoint (WLP) shares were falling more than 3.5% in premarket trading after the health insurer reported earnings per share of $2.09, better than the $1.83 a share expected by analysts, but posted revenue of $15.13 billion, below forecasts of $15.3 billion as enrollment declined by over 2%.

Kraft Foods (KRFT) shares were rising more than 1% after the company posted better-than-expected third-quarter earnings in its first earnings announcement since the company split into two, as sales got a boost from new products.

Macy's (M) shares were up 0.19% after the retailer posted third-quarter earnings that exceeded estimates and hiked its full-year outlook. The retailer got a boost from its efforts to customize products to local preferences and to put more focus on trendy brands. It also stayed upbeat about the holiday season even after destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Whole Foods Market (WFM) is expected to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after Wednesday's closing bell, and analysts are calling for a profit of 60 cents a share in the September-ended period on revenue of $2.91 billion.

Shares of the supermarket operator have risen more than 40% so far in 2012.

Shares were down 0.41% in premarket trading.

News Corp. (NWSA) on Tuesday posted fiscal first-quarter earnings of $2.23 billion, or 94 cents a share, on revenue of $8.14 billion, up from a year-earlier equivalent profit of $738 million, or 28 cents a share, on revenue of $7.96 billion.

Excluding items, News Corp. reported adjusted earnings of 43 cents a share, beating Wall Street's consensus view of 37 cents.

Shares were gaining nearly 2%.

McGraw-Hill (MHP) has entered into exclusive discussions to sell its education unit to Apollo Global Management (APO), and the two sides could reach an agreement within a few weeks, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

The final price for the educational publisher is expected to be below $2.5 billion, less than the $3 billion to $4 billion the sellers had sought initially, the people said.

Plexus (PLXS) announced Tuesday it was no longer a supplier for Juniper Networks (JNPR).

Plexus, a provider of electronic manufacturing services, said it learned of Juniper's decision on Monday and that while it's unclear on the exact timing of the transition it expects it will occur by the end of its current fiscal year.

Plexus shares were plunging more than 24.5%.
