Obama Defeats Romney: 2012 Election Night Blog Recap

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Barack Obama has been reelected as President of the United States on Tuesday night, according to multiple media reports, which have the incumbent defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney after multiple battleground states tipped in Obama's favor.

At last check, Obama held leads in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, New Hampshire, Nevada, Wisconsin and Iowa, according to The Associated Press, a group that represents the majority of the so-called swing states that Romney needed to carry in order to unseat the president.

The electoral vote count was 290 to 200 in favor of Obama.

The popular vote was still slightly in favor of Romney, 44.2 million to 44.1 million, but NBC News, Bloomberg News, Fox News and other outlets were also projecting the electoral college majority for Obama.

The New York Times as well has called the election in favor of Obama with an electoral vote count of 285 to 200.

Republicans retained a majority in the House of Representatives and Democrats held the U.S. Senate. The status-quo results in Congress are sure to leave doubt among investors about whether lawmakers will be able to sufficiently compromise and avoid looming fiscal cliff.
