Minister Steven Blaney Honours Veterans At Candlelight Tribute
OTTAWA, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, and Vice-Admiral Maddison, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, joined more than 600 people, including hundreds of Veterans and youth, in a candlelight tribute this evening at the Centrepointe Theatre in Ottawa.
"Veterans' Week is a time for Canadians across the country to reach out to Veterans and those who are still serving to acknowledge their dedication," said Minister Blaney. "It is our duty to keep their memories and the details of their sacrifices alive."
Veterans Affairs Canada has co-hosted this tribute with the City of Ottawa for 12 consecutive years. The ceremony, which began in the Netherlands as a symbol of gratitude to those who liberated the country during the Second World War, commemorates the memory of the many who have served and the many who have died serving Canada.
During the ceremony, Mayor Watson announced that a local street will be named after Jerome Jodoin, a Second World War Veteran, as part of the City's annual street-naming initiative. Mayor Watson presented a commemorative street sign to his family."As one of Canada's last surviving Second World War Navy Veterans, Mr. Jodoin served as a proud representative of previous generations," said Mayor Watson. "We're proud to honour the service of Mr. Jodoin and all of our Veterans." This year marks significant historical military milestones with the 95 th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the 95 th anniversary of the capture of Passchendaele and the 70 th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans' Week. This Veterans' Week, take time to remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride.
