The Hartford Helps Customers Recover From Storm Sandy

In response to Storm Sandy, The Hartford has mobilized its Catastrophe Team and taken a number of steps to help affected customers recover. The company will voluntarily suspend non-payment cancellation of homeowners, automobile, commercial insurance, group benefits or individual life policies for customers affected by Storm Sandy due to their temporary inability to make their premium payments. Based on the facts and circumstances of this storm, The Hartford determined that hurricane deductibles will not apply. Beyond that, coverage is determined based on each individual policy.

"On behalf of all of us at The Hartford, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by Storm Sandy,” said The Hartford’s Chairman, President and CEO Liam E. McGee. “This was a devastating and highly unusual storm with a large footprint and tropical force winds that impacted a highly populated area. Our top priority is to help our customers recover, and we hope this payment relief will provide them with some minor reprieve.”

Although premium bills will continue to be issued, policy cancellations due to non-payment will be temporarily suspended in areas heavily impacted by the storm, retroactive to at least Oct. 29, 2012. The grace period will extend for at least 60 days. In addition, The Hartford continues to work with policyholders in all affected areas in arranging special payment accommodations as needed.

The Hartford’s Catastrophe Team is deployed across the affected areas, working around the clock to help policyholders, and is already paying claims to some customers. The company encourages customers to contact the claims center as quickly as reasonably possible to start the claims process. In addition, The Hartford announced a $250,000 contribution to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts in support of those affected by Storm Sandy.
