RI Employers Can Seek Storm Help For Workers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) â¿¿ Some Rhode Island workers who find themselves out of work because of storm damage from Sandy may be able to avoid the usual one-week delay in earning unemployment benefits.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee and state Labor and Training Director Charles Fogarty say employers need to seek a waiver for nonseasonal workers they have to lay off because of Sandy. State law provides for the waiver in case of a natural disaster or state emergency.

The employers also won't face the usual charges against their own unemployment insurance accounts.

Employers can get waiver applications Labor and Training Department's website or by calling or emailing for information.

Workers should follow standard unemployment filing procedures. They'll be credited for the extra week if their bosses get the waiver.
