Windows Phone 8 Prices Revealed
NEW YORK (TheStreet) - We're exactly one week away from Microsoft's (MSFT) big Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco, but we're starting to learn about pricing of some of the new and improved smartphones. Up until now, prices have been a very tightly guarded secret.
Over the weekend Best Buy (BBY) began taking orders for both the Nokia (NOK) Lumia 920 and HTC's Windows phones. Both will operate on AT&T's (T) 4G data network.
As for posted prices, The Lumia 920 was going for $150 and the HTC 8X sells for $100. Both prices reflect discounts afforded to those who agree to a two-year contract.
Notice I said the Lumia 920 was going for $150. I used the past tense because Best Buy has removed that phone from its WP8 pre-order Web page. There's no official word why the listing disappeared. We hope Best Buy did so because of high volume sales - not because of distribution or any other possible problems.
The HTC 8X is still available for pre-order, but the listing says the device "will ship when available." HTC's thin, flagship design, has a 4.3-inch touchscreen (capable of 720 by 1280 high definition video), LTE data speeds, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of onboard flash storage plus Beats Audio and, of course, the completely overhauled Windows Phone 8 operating system. Acer, Dell (DELL), LG and Samsung are among the other manufacturers who have announced new Windows Phone 8 devices. --Written by Gary Krakow in New York. >To submit a news tip, send an email to: tips@thestreet.com.Select the service that is right for you!
