Toyota Recalls 7.43M Vehicles Due to Window Switch

TORRANCE, Calif. -- ( TheStreet) -- Toyota (TM) said Wednesday it will recall 7.43 million vehicles worldwide because of a faulty power window switch.

The recall includes 2.5 million vehicles sold in the U.S. between 2007 and 2009. Toyota said it failed to evenly apply grease to the driver's side power window switch during assembly. As a result, normal operation of the switch could cause the assembly to melt, potentially leading to smoke or fire.

No crashes had resulted from the faulty switch. However, more than 200 problems were reported in the U.S., with a smaller number of problems elsewhere, including 39 in Japan, according to The Associated Press.

In the U.S., vehicles involved include 938,100 Camrys; 337,100 Tundras; 336,400 RAV4s; 270,900 Corollas and smaller numbers of the Yaris, Camry Hybrid, Scion xD, Scion xA, Sequia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid and Matrix. Owners of vehicles covered by the recall will receive notification letters starting late this month. Repairs, offered free of charge, will take about one hour.

Over the past several years, Toyota has recalled 14 million vehicles, putting a dent in its long-standing reputation for quality. However, Toyota buyers generally remain loyal and this year Toyota sales are soaring following production shortfalls a year ago because of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
