TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The US Airways (NYSE: LCC) Education Foundation, which provides college scholarships to dependents of US Airways employees and awards annual grants to non-profit organizations with qualifying children's educational programs, awarded $170,000 in grants as part of its 2012 Community Education Grant Program.

The Education Foundation awarded grants of $10,000 each to five non-profit organizations located in the airline's three hub cities of Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia and Phoenix. Additionally, two non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C., a US Airways focus city, each received a $10,000 grant, for a total of 17 grants distributed this year. Grants are awarded to educational programs for children age 18 and younger that increase achievement for economically disadvantaged and developmentally disabled young people or programs that increase student interest and achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

The 2012 Community Education Grant Program awarded grants to the following organizations:

  • Charlotte, N.C. – Allegro Foundation, Discovery Place, Freedom School Partners, Junior Achievement of Charlotte and Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of the Central Carolinas
  • Philadelphia – Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia Inc., Chester County Futures Inc., iRAXIS Inc., North Penn Valley Boys & Girls Club and Philadelphia Futures
  • Phoenix – Arizona Science Center, Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix, Elevate Phoenix, Hands On Greater Phoenix and the Phoenix Symphony
  • Washington, D. C. – Higher Achievement Program, Inc. and Resources for Inner City Children

Since the Education Foundation's inception in 1990, more than $4.2 million has been awarded through grants and college scholarships for dependents of US Airways employees. The amount of annual funding is subject to change from year to year and is solely dependent on funds raised in the previous year. Funding sources include contributions from US Airways employees, fundraising events and private donations. In 2012 US Airways Education Foundation fundraisers included the 3 rd Annual Philadelphia Suitcase Soiree and the 1 st Annual Charlotte Suitcase Soiree, which raised more than $200,000. Funds raised at the 19 th Annual Phoenix Golf Tournament on Nov. 2 will also support the programs of the US Airways Education Foundation. Annually, more than $450,000 in scholarship and grants are awarded by the Foundation.

US Airways provides charitable contributions to non-profit organizations in the airline's hubs and focus city through four channels of giving: the Corporate Giving Program, the US Airways Education Foundation, the US Airways Community Foundation and the annual " Hope Takes Flight" campaign benefitting the United Way. In 2012, US Airways and its employees will give more than $6.2 million in cash and travel contributions to non-profit organizations that enrich, educate and engage the communities served by the airline. More information regarding the airline's corporate giving program can be found at www.usairways.com/corporategiving.
