Editor's Note: TheStreet ratings do not represent the views of TheStreet's staff or its contributors. Ratings are established by computer based on metrics for performance (which includes growth, stock performance, efficiency and valuation) and risk (volatility and solvency). Companies with poor cash flow or high debt levels tend to earn lower ratings in our model.

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- NACCO Industries (NYSE: NC) has been downgraded by TheStreet Ratings from buy to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its growth in earnings per share, attractive valuation levels and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including weak operating cash flow, a generally disappointing performance in the stock itself and poor profit margins.

Highlights from the ratings report include:

  • NACCO INDUSTRIES has improved earnings per share by 14.0% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. During the past fiscal year, NACCO INDUSTRIES increased its bottom line by earning $19.28 versus $9.52 in the prior year.
  • Despite the weak revenue results, NC has outperformed against the industry average of 28.9%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly dropped by 4.6%. The declining revenue has not hurt the company's bottom line, with increasing earnings per share.
  • NC has underperformed the S&P 500 Index, declining 20.79% from its price level of one year ago. The fact that the stock is now selling for less than others in its industry in relation to its current earnings is not reason enough to justify a buy rating at this time.
  • Net operating cash flow has decreased to $49.20 million or 23.95% when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, when comparing to the industry average, the firm's growth rate is much lower.
.

NACCO Industries, Inc. engages in lift trucks, small appliances, specialty retail, and mining businesses worldwide. The company has a P/E ratio of three, equal to the average industrial industry P/E ratio and below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. NACCO has a market cap of $305.7 million and is part of the industrial goods sector and industrial industry. Shares are down 49.6% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.
