Why I Won't Waste My Time Voting For Obama or Romney
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- I have Canadian neighbors. They can't vote, but they live in California. They have a relative in town from Quebec. All three of them -- husband, wife, wife's mother -- care more about the U.S. presidential election than I do.
Actually, I do "care." I'm just not all that into it. Oddly, I am more into Canadian politics than my Canadian friends. It just boils down to the lesser of two absurdities.
Meantime, on Tuesday, Jim Cramer of TheStreet and CNBC tweeted that, because of Pennsylvania's new voter ID law, his Dad would not be able to vote in the upcoming election. That tweet got Pennsylvania authorities on the case and Cramer's dad is good to go, as Talking Points Memo reported.
Cramer said he never meant the whole thing as a political statement. He simply wanted to make sure his father could vote. Apparently, the elder Cramer was sick about the prospect of not voting. I would have done the same for my dad.
These experiences resonate with me. Here, you have Canadians so riveted by the American political process that they glued themselves to live coverage of both the Republican and Democratic conventions. And then there's Cramer's dad -- a veteran, a man who obviously takes pride in his right to vote. These Canadians have different backgrounds and experiences than I have. So does Cramer's dad. I love Canadians (my own father was born in Canada). And I have mad respect for those willing to sacrifice themselves for their country, just as I stand in awe of people who fight fires and risk taking a bullet in their quest to protect and serve. I'll say it flat out -- I'm not that brave. So I appreciate the perspectives of those who think and act differently than I do. But, to be brutally honest, while I can see where they come from, I cannot relate. I am so on the opposite side of sentiment it makes me feel like a bad person. Several weeks ago, I wrote an article for TheStreet stating I would vote for Mitt Romney. I had just sent the IRS an estimated tax payment. In anticipation of higher taxes, I was planning for 2013. I was angry and frustrated.Select the service that is right for you!
