Google's Knowledge Graph: 'Dumb & Dumber'
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- If you're in search of the best action movie, comedy movie, or amusement ride, Google (GOOG) supposedly has your back. Only if you agree with following the crowd, however.
Last week, the search giant announced the expansion of its Knowledge Graph feature, which allows a user to use the collective intelligence (I use that term loosely) of the Internet when entering such opinion-driven queries as "best action movie" or "best Great Adventure ride."
While a nice feature, there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason to how the lists are put together, other than popular opinion. For action movies, titles such as The Dark Knight, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Inception and others show up on top of the page.
This is where it gets murky. The blog post talks about the collective intelligence of the Web, but then says "...we'll begin showing the carousel for factual lists to our English users on all Google domains across the world." There's nothing factual about these lists. It's subject to opinion, not fact.
Doing a search query for "best animated movies" only pulled up twelve selections, while searching for "animated movies" pulled twice the amount, including many Disney films from the early day's of animated cinema. Google either needs to get out of the popularity business and back into the business of searching for facts, or finish the feature before rolling it out to the public. It certainly seems like a Dumb & Dumber move to me. Interested in more on Google? See TheStreet Ratings' report card for this stock. --Written by Chris Ciaccia in New York >Contact by Email.
