ABB Ltd. (ABB): Today's Featured Industrial Laggard

Editor's Note: TheStreet ratings do not represent the views of TheStreet's staff or its contributors. Ratings are established by computer based on metrics for performance (which includes growth, stock performance, efficiency and valuation) and risk (volatility and solvency). Companies with poor cash flow or high debt levels tend to earn lower ratings in our model.

ABB (ABB) pushed the Industrial industry lower today making it today's featured Industrial laggard. The industry as a whole closed the day up 0.2%. By the end of trading, ABB fell 24 cents (-1.3%) to $17.79 on light volume. Throughout the day, two million shares of ABB exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 3.4 million shares. The stock ranged in price between $17.76-$17.95 after having opened the day at $17.84 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $18.03. Other companies within the Industrial industry that declined today were: THT Heat Transfer Technology (THTI), down 8.5%, P & F Industries (PFIN), down 4.8%, Ecotality (ECTY), down 4.8%, and Tecumseh Products Company (TECUA), down 4.8%.

ABB Ltd provides power and automation technologies for utility and industrial customers worldwide. ABB has a market cap of $41.01 billion and is part of the industrial goods sector. The company has a P/E ratio of 13, below the average industrial industry P/E ratio of 14 and below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are down 4.7% year to date as of the close of trading on Monday. Currently there are six analysts that rate ABB a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and four rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates ABB as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its attractive valuation levels, notable return on equity and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

On the positive front, A.M. Castle (CAS), up 26.8%, Daktronics (DAKT), up 17%, Nordson Corporation (NDSN), up 11%, and Adept Technology (ADEP), up 10.5%, were all gainers within the industrial industry with Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) being today's featured industrial industry leader.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the industrial industry could consider SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) while those bearish on the industrial industry could consider ProShares UltraShort Industrials (SIJ).
