Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Dunkin' Brands: Hot Trends
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Popular searches on the Internet include Dunkin Donuts as a lawsuit has been filed against Dunkin' Brands (DNKN) for "systematic racial discrimination" against minority franchise owners.
Former franchise owners Reggie and Amy Pretto filed the lawsuit in New Jersey Superior Court on Monday. The lawsuit alleges the company steered them to open stores in poor neighborhoods, falsely claiming that there were no more lucrative areas available, while awarding those locations to white franchise owners.
The Prettos, an African-American couple, were joined in their lawsuit by Priti Shetty, an Indian woman who alleges Dunkin' turned down her request to open a store at a particular location and then allowed a male franchisee to do so. Shetty also charges that an operations manager from the company made "anti-female" remarks to her.
Dunkin has not commented on the lawsuit. The brand has a history of undergoing litigation with its franchisees.
Wal-Mart (WMT) is trending as the retailer is offering a significant discount on Apple (AAPL) iTunes gift cards. Wal-Mart is now offering iTunes gift cards worth $100 for $80. Customers can purchase the electronic card online and have it sent to themselves or another person via email or to an iTunes account. Wal-Mart said it could take up to 48 hours for customers to receive an email with a PIN access code to the gift card, though customers will likely receive it within moments of ordering it. The gift card can be used to purchase anything on iTunes - including music, apps, movies and other digital content.
Microsoft (MSFT) is another popular search. The company has started taking orders for a Windows 8 upgrade. Microsoft had promised the upgrade to customers who purchased a new PC with Windows 7 since June 2. Customers who are eligible for the upgrade can now fill out an online form to submit themselves for the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. The upgrade costs $14.99 and is expected to be delivered on October 26. Customers will receive promo codes via email with instructions on how to purchase the upgrade closer to the October 26 ship date.
