KT Selects Cavium's OCTEON Fusion⿢ For Commercial Deployment Of LTE Small Cell

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Cavium, Inc.(NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications and the digital home,  today announced that KT (formerly Korea Telecom, www.kt.com),  the largest communication service provider in Korea, has selected Cavium's OCTEON Fusion™ platform for  the first stage of commercial deployment of LTE small cell.

Rapid adoption of smartphones, tablets and media rich wireless devices, coupled with social networking, IP video and internet applications are driving the doubling of mobile data traffic every year.  Globally, service providers such as KT are prioritizing swift rollout of LTE small cell to deliver the data bandwidth required for these applications to their large subscriber bases. Carriers can rapidly alleviate spectrum and capacity limitations, and expand their existing LTE macro cell based networks with an overlay of small cells using Cavium's OCTEON Fusion "base station on a chip" hardware and software platform.  To effectively deploy and manage such a large and distributed overlay radio access network, small cell base stations need to be interoperable with the existing macro and core networks, compact, energy efficient and reliable. Additionally, they need to offer differentiating capabilities such as concurrent support of WLAN, QoS, interference mitigation and Self-Optimizing Networks (SON). The OCTEON Fusion Platform optimally addresses all these requirements in a low-cost and low-power profile.
