Apple Roundup: Verizon, Store, SIM Cards
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The top Apple (AAPL) news from across the globe includes no slowdown in iPhone sales at Verizon (VZ), the Apple Store Web site getting an upgrade, and there's a possibility of an iPhone SIM card.
Verizon reported second-quarter earnings that were largely in line with Wall Street estimates, but there doesn't appear to be any slowdown in iPhone sales, ahead of the next version.
The telecom giant said it sold 2.7 million iPhones in the quarter, up 17% year-over-year. That's down from 3.2 million iPhones in the first quarter, but shows the remarkable demand for Apple's phone.
Verizon also activated 3.2 million Long Term Evolution (LTE) devices during the quarter. The next version of the iPhone is widely expected to be LTE compatible. The next iPhone reportedly will get tiny SIM cards, known as nano-SIMs. European carriers are supposedly testing out these tiny SIM cards, as Apple gets ready to launch its new smartphone, which is expected to debut later this year. AT&T (T) may also get these nano-SIMs, as its network has SIM cards for its phones. Apple could not be reached for comment for this story.
As Apple puts Retina Display into more of its offerings, it's changing how it delivers those products. Apple's online store is getting high-resolution graphics to help improve the Web site when viewed on a Retina Display product. The changes have not been put into action yet, but the graphics were found on Apple's servers by a developer earlier this week, according to the Apple Insider Web site. Apple currently has five products that utilize Retina Display: the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new iPad, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch.
Shares of Apple are higher this morning, up 0.64% to $610.16. Interested in more on Apple? See TheStreet Ratings' report card for this stock. Check out our new tech blog, Tech Trends.
