3 Things You Should Know About Small Business: July 16

Stock quotes in this article: MCD

NEW YORK (TheStreet)--- What's happening in small business today?

1. All about Digg's sale to Betaworks. Small Business Trends has a great round up on media coverage of the sale of social media site Digg, from reasons why the sale price was much lower than expected and if that sounds warning bells for the industry, to whether this is a "cautionary tale about what happens when you don't pay enough attention to your customers and community."

2. Is your business "glocal"? YFS Magazine says that more small businesses should go glocal. The term, which means "developing a large-scale mindset for your business but interpreting it for local benefit," is the new business as usual, the article says, but it hasn't had as much traction with small businesses as it's had with big corporations. Going forward, it will be increasingly important to adopt this mindset. The article offers suggestions on how to get your small business up to speed.

A good example of this practice is McDonald's (MCD) McLobster. Most McDonald's customers might be unfamiliar with the fast-food chain's lobster roll, but in New England and in Canada it is a highly popular menu item. This is a primary example of a global company thinking locally, according to the article.

3. Kickstarter to launch in the U.K. Popular crowdfunding website, Kickstarter, announced Monday that it plans to expand to the U.K. later this year, according to PCMag. Users in the U.K. can already set up Kickstarter fundraising projects, however, they need to have a U.S. bank account to do so.

Kickstarter launched in 2009 and has become the largest of a sea of crowdfunding platforms available today.
