The United order has historic significance because United and Boeing were once the same company. For airline geeks only, we point out that United's original predecessor was Varney Airways, which was founded in Boise, Idaho, in 1926 and acquired by Boeing founder William Boeing in 1927. In 1929, Boeing named his company United Aircraft and Transport Company. In 1930, Congress decreed that airlines and aircraft manufacturers could not have common ownership and the company split up. And in 2001, Boeing moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, long United's home.
United becomes the North American launch customer for both the 737 MAX 9 and for the Boeing 787, with the first 787 - ordered by Continental --scheduled to arrive in September. It was also the global launch customer for the 767 and the 777.
