Last week we asked OpenFund manager Don Luskin about his favorite sites. Reader Melinda M. Harper of Greenwood Village, Colo., disagreed with Luskin's high praise of Polyconomics.com, saying she favors Dismal.com for economic news. "Their format permits you to see easily and quickly exactly what is there. I also like not having to register at dismal.com," Harper says. "You may want to weigh the value of my assessment against the fact that I am a CPA, not an economist. Like most CPAs, I value accessible, practical information."

Any econ types out there interested in helping me with a meaty comparison contrast?

Meanwhile, this week we hear from Jan Parr, editor of Online Investor magazine, a monthly newsstand magazine for independent investors and traders who use the Web to invest and manage their money. Also on www.onlineinvestor.com . (BTW: At the suggestion of reader Jill Hargus of Center Valley, Pa., I've been trying to reach fund manager Kevin Landis for his favorite sites but have not yet heard back. Any folks you'd like me to ask? Email me at whatworks@thestreet.com.)

Here are some of Parr's favorites:

What Works According to Jan Parr
BigEasyInvestor.com This new site is for awesome, powerful stock screening -- it could take the place of high-priced software. Free, for now.
MaxFunds.com Nobody else does what these guys do: identify small, unknown funds that are under the radar of most folks.
QuoteTracker.com Free streaming intraday live charts. How do they do it?
Bulldogresearch.com Let's make the analysts accountable! How have their picks fared? Bulldog tells you.
IntelligentSpeculator.com Teresa Lo rocks! If you want to learn technical analysis, she'll teach you. Click on Stock Charts for access to Lo's new Ottographs, an automated version of her trading system.
IdeaAdvisor.com Formerly called StreetAdvisor. Rumors, analysis, stock ideas and more from smart guys like Kevin Prigel.
Dislikes Anything with "women" in the title. Why do women need separate investing sites? These are marketing gimmicks and are by their nature condescending.
