Humana Active Outlook® Walking Program Launches To Improve Senior Health Through Physical Activity And Socialization

Humana Medicare Advantage members and seniors in general now have a new option to improve their health and well-being through walking and socializing with the launch of the Humana Active Outlook ^® Walking Program. The walking program is free of charge and available through local Humana Guidance Centers in 17 markets across the U.S., as well as online.

Humana is gearing up the national walking program this month after the pilot program showed promising results. The six-month pilot, which began in November 2011, enrolled more than 1,000 seniors who took 173.5 million steps, walked 66,624 miles (equivalent to 2.5 laps around the earth at the equator) and burned nearly 3 million calories. Local Humana Guidance Centers will be holding walks and other events throughout the summer to encourage participant activity and recognize their efforts.

The walking program is currently available at Humana Guidance Centers in Chicago, IL.; Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Dallas, TX.; Fort Lauderdale, FL.; Kansas City, MO.; Knoxville, TN; Las Vegas, NV.; Mesa, AZ.; Milwaukee, WI.; Minneapolis, MN.; Orlando, FL.; Peoria, IL.; and Tampa, FL. The program will be launched during the third quarter at new Humana Guidance Centers in Austin and San Antonio, TX.

Seniors are encouraged to join the walking groups, which meet at least once per week at the Guidance Centers, for instructor-led group walks and to learn proper walking and stretching techniques. Each participant will receive a free pedometer at signup to track their steps and calories burned. At the end of each outing, participants upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk, which tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.
