Microsoft Takes on Apple with Windows 8 Pro Pricing
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Microsoft (MSFT) has confirmed that it will cost users just $39.99 for Windows 8 Pro if they upgrade from a previous version of Windows.
If you are running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, users can download a copy of Windows 8 for $39.99, a move very similar to what Apple (AAPL) has done with its Mac operating system upgrades. Apple announced OS X Mountain Lion, its newest computer operating system, will be available for download in the Mac App Store for $19.99.

Previous versions of Windows used to cost consumers significantly more. A look on Amazon shows the Windows 7 Premium version for $99.99, while the Windows 7 Professional version sells for $136.48.
The upgrade will be available in 131 markets, and will be available both online and at retail runs through January 31st, 2013. Users may still buy a packaged version of Windows 8 Pro at their local store for $69.99.
Shares of Microsoft were lower in late afternoon trading, off 0.49% to $30.44. Interested in more on Microsoft? See TheStreet Ratings' report card for this stock.
