East Coast Storms Kill at Least 12
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Powerful storms pummeled the eastern U.S. on Friday evening, killing at least 12 people and knocking out power to more than 3 million people, according to the Associated Press.
The power outages are worrisome because they leave homes and businesses without air conditioning on a day of near-triple-digit temperatures. At midafternoon Saturday, it was 96 degrees in Washington.
As of Saturday afternoon, the storms were believed responsible for 12 deaths, according to the AP: six in Virginia; two in New Jersey; two in Maryland; one in Ohio; and one in Washington.
Workers were attempting to remove downed tree limbs and restore electricity in affected areas, the AP added.
