Phoenix School System Receives National Award And LEED Platinum Certification With Help From Ingersoll Rand

The U.S. Department of Education added Roadrunner Elementary School in Phoenix to its list of nationally recognized Green Ribbon Schools, a federal program that honors schools that adopt a comprehensive approach to creating “green” environments. This award was made possible, in part, through technology, expertise, and assistance of the Ingersoll Rand Trane brand through the local support provided by its southwest district.

The assistance from Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort systems and solutions and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, helped Roadrunner school qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum status ¹.

The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) program was established in September. The program honors schools that create “green” environments by reducing their environmental impact, promoting health and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in growing the global economy.

“Increasingly, local communities must look for innovative ways to maximize their budgets while developing responsible and sustainable infrastructure for the next generation of buildings,” said W. Scott Tew, executive director for the Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at Ingersoll Rand (CEES).

“This recognition illustrates how the latest technology can produce significant positive benefits for schools and communities through energy efficiency."

“We acknowledge the positive benefits that safe, comfortable and efficient schools have in enhancing student performance while also improving the environments and managing costs in our communities,” said Trane district manager Ken Eggers. “Southwest Trane leapt at the opportunity to participate in such a noteworthy national initiative in our backyard. We were invited to participate because our chillers are so highly regarded for their energy efficiency. And that efficiency yields important environmental benefits.”

Contractors broke ground in December on the $4 million schoolhouse in Phoenix, which will serve 800 students. Trane provided a CGAM chiller with full load energy efficiencies that exceed ASHRAE 90.1 (2007) standards and utilizes a low R410A refrigerant charge to support the LEED green building credit for low lifetime refrigerant emissions.
