Facebook Adds Sheryl Sandberg to Board: Hot Trends
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Popular searches on the Internet include Facebook (FB) as the online social network announced it has added Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg to its board.
The move makes Sandberg the first woman on Facebook's eight-member board. There have been calls for the company to add women to its board, though Facebook did not indicate whether the decision was in response to them. Sandberg is also the first Facebook executive after founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to be named to the board.
Sandberg has been instrumental in growing Facebook's advertising business. She has also been a face of the company in the public eye, often serving at press conferences and in meetings or interviews. Sandberg also serves on the boards of Walt Disney and women's advocacy groups.
Credit Suisse (CS) is trending as the company plans additional job cuts in Europe. The Swiss bank is reportedly planning to cut its European investment banking division by up to 30% over the next year. The layoffs, which may cut up to one-third of senior employees at the bank, are expected to begin in July. The reports come after Switzerland's central bank issued a warning indicating that Credit Suisse must increase its capital this year. Credit Suisse said in a recent progress report that it had axed 2,000 jobs by the end of March. Those cuts are part of the 3,500 jobs it announced it would cut last year as part of its restructuring efforts. The bank also said it plans to fire an additional 126 employees in the New York area by Aug. 6, in addition to the 109 whom already lost their jobs earlier this year.
Coca-Cola (KO) is another popular search. The company announced it will pour an additional $3 billion into investing in India over the next eight years. The company already announced a $2 billion five-year investment plan in the country in November. The company has been trying to gain ground on PepsiCo (PEP), which is ahead of Coca-Cola in India's beverages market.
