Saving Lives Through Adoption, One Pet At A Time (Graphic: Business Wire)

WHAT:		PetSmart ® and PetSmart Charities ® are hosting a High Five! party in every PetSmart store in North America to celebrate the 5-millionth pet adopted through the in-store adoption program since 1994. The 5-millionth pet is Dodge, a 5-year-old black and white Husky who was adopted June 2 in Boynton Beach, Florida. Pet parents and their pets are invited to join the celebration and take commemorative photos giving each other a high-five in a nod to the millions of homeless pets who have been saved through adoption. The party will include:
		-- Pet trainers on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to teach pets how to “high five” with their pet parents for a cell-phone picture
WHY:		Approximately 8 million pets end up in U.S. shelters each year and 4 million are euthanized, simply because they don’t have homes. PetSmart has been committed to stopping pet overpopulation through adoption since it was founded in 1987. Today, more than 1,100 pets are adopted daily through the PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers located inside every PetSmart store in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. That’s 400,000 pets who find homes each year, accounting for about 10 percent of all U.S. adoptions. PetSmart, through PetSmart Charities, works with nearly 2,000 local animal-welfare organizations that offer in-store adoptions.
