Infoblox Inc. today announced availability of a patch for the Infoblox NIOS™ operating system addressing the newest BIND vulnerability ( CVE-2012-1667) publicized by the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC). BIND is the industry-standard protocol for performing Domain Name System (DNS) services that are essential to the daily operation of an organization’s computer network and Internet presence.
Underscoring Infoblox’s commitment to help its customers achieve nonstop DNS uptime, the Infoblox patches have been made available within 24 hours of the announcement by ISC to the public about the vulnerability.
According to ISC’s announcement, CVE-2012-1667 is classified as a severe defect in all currently supported release versions of ISC BIND 9 and can cause DNS server crashes resulting in interruptions to DNS service. To prevent exploits, all organizations are encouraged to apply the patch immediately.
Organizations using Infoblox’s unique Grid technology to link Infoblox appliances together into a unified system can deploy the new patch in a matter of minutes to all their Infoblox appliances with a single mouse click and without service interruptions.Alternative DNS solutions – such as general-purpose servers and operating systems – generally require significantly more technical resources and time to apply patches to individual servers throughout an organization’s network. They also often require scheduled downtime to apply the patches. Depending on the DNS infrastructure, upgrades to alternative solutions can result in service interruptions, take days or weeks to apply and leave a network vulnerable. The patch for Infoblox systems is available to Infoblox customers with active maintenance contracts on the Infoblox Support site.
