MADISON, Wis., June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: LNT), filed a request today with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) to implement a $25 million or 2.5 percent decrease in retail electric rates for calendar year 2013 due to expected lower electric fuel costs. WPL made the request as part of its required annual electric fuel cost plan filing.

WPL's request includes a monthly decrease of approximately $1.50 for residential customers using 600kWh/month. Percentage and dollar decreases may vary for individual customers, depending on their customer class, usage patterns and the final rate levels authorized by the PSCW. According to the PSCW's electric residential bill comparison, WPL currently has the second-lowest monthly residential electric bills among Wisconsin's investor-owned utilities.

"We are pleased that our company's expected lower 2013 electric fuel costs can be passed on to our customers," said Patricia Kampling, Alliant Energy Chairman, President and CEO. "Pending approval of our previously announced 2013-2014 base rate freeze proposal filed last month, and this fuel cost plan filing today, our customers could see a 2.5 percent decrease in total retail electric rates next year. That's definitely good news for our customers."

WPL's annual electric fuel cost plan filing is expected to receive PSCW approval by the end of this year. It would become effective January 1, 2013, and would be in place until the end of 2013.

Early last month, WPL filed a request with the PSCW to implement a retail electric base rate freeze proposal (excluding fuel costs) for calendar years 2013 and 2014 and a retail gas base rate reduction for 2013. If approved, the proposal will keep retail electric customer base rates at their current levels through 2014 (except for changes in fuel costs previously noted) and will reduce annual retail gas base rates by $13 million or 7 percent in 2013, followed by a freeze of those gas rates for 2014.

Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), based in Madison, Wis., provides electric service to approximately 459,000 customers and natural gas service to approximately 180,000 customers in more than 600 communities across central and southern Wisconsin. WPL is committed to providing the energy and exceptional service its customers and communities expect – safely, reliably, and affordably.
