PCTEL, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCTI), a leader in antenna and scanning receiver solutions, announced today that its joint venture, PCTEL Secure LLC, released its ProsettaCore™ security solution as a Software Developer’s Kit (SDK) to beta test customers. During the beta test, the customers will evaluate the solution, provide feedback to PCTEL, and negotiate the terms of their potential license. As previously discussed during PCTEL’s first quarter earnings release conference call, the beta test customers include government, defense systems integrators, and semiconductor entities.
“We are excited about this milestone,” said Marty Singer, PCTEL’s Chairman and CEO. “This program has been on track for 15 months. During that period, we created and filed three patent applications, developed a prototype that demonstrated the pervasive security threats to Android-based, mobile devices, and now we have delivered the ProsettaCore product in the form of a well-documented SDK which third parties can incorporate into their mobile solutions. We are pursuing three business paths: the licensing of the SDK to significant players in the industry, the packaging of a security test environment, and our own development of security solutions for SCADA applications,” added Singer.
The ProsettaCore solution allows for a trusted execution environment whereby multiple distinct security policies can run on Android. The tools provided help the developer create simple XML policies and burn them into the image. For example, the target could have a "Personal Use" policy, and a "Secure" policy, each having different configuration files, apps, access privileges, and more.
ProsettaCore adds a thin layer around Linux to enforce Mandatory Access Control (MAC) security policies at both the operating system level and below, while still allowing for complete compatibility with existing Linux and Android security models and applications. In fact, the ProsettaCore model allows for applications to be placed into secure categories without the re-engineering associated with traditional isolation architectures, which reduces cost and time to market.
