Community Event Featuring Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, And Former Pro Baseball Player, Addresses Substance Abuse, Depression, Self-Harm And Eating Disorders In Today's Youth
KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Many teens and young adults today are struggling with numerous challenging disorders and addictions. To help families, coaches and the community better understand these complex issues, Midwest Sports Productions and Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center are hosting a special free event, "Strategies for Hope: Understanding Substance Abuse, Depression, Self-harm and Eating Disorders in Today's Youth."
The event will take place 7 – 9 p.m., on Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Westside Family Church, 8500 Woodsonia Drive in Lenexa, Kansas. Speakers include Margaret Nagib, PsyD, spirituality clinical coordinator and primary therapist at Timberline Knolls, and Bill Severns, a motivational speaker, former professional baseball player and All-American at the University of Oklahoma, and author of "Keepers of the Sandlot", a book dedicated to parents, athletes and coaches. The book talks about life lessons based on Bill's experience at every level of the game. Bill's second book, "The Sandlot Strategy," will be released this spring. Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, eating disorders awareness advocate and community relations specialist at Timberline Knolls, will serve as the evening's emcee and panel discussion moderator.
The event is geared to parents, coaches and athletes, mental health professionals, church and community leaders, and anyone interested in the evening's topic matter."We look forward to bringing the community together for an event that will raise awareness and provide resources to those in need," said Amy Sullivan, professional outreach representative for Timberline Knolls and a registered dietitian. "Community members and mental health professionals will learn and discuss the issues confronting our youth today in an open forum." In addition to the speakers, Todd Warren, musician and spirituality coordinator at Timberline Knolls, will provide inspirational music at the event. Todd uses music to help individuals express and celebrate their spirituality. He is a nationally known songwriter, recording artist and ordained minister.
