Potter Voice Technologies Files Colorado Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Apple, Google, Others, Says The Lanier Law Firm
DENVER, April 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorneys from The Lanier Law Firm are representing Brighton, Colo.-based Potter Voice Technologies LLC in a federal patent infringement lawsuit against a group of cell phone manufacturers and technology companies for allegedly infringing a 14-year-old patent that covers technology used in Apple's Siri and other electronic products that rely on voice commands to control computer functions.
The lawsuit filed April 25, 2012, in Denver federal court includes claims against a group of 15 defendant companies accused of infringing Potter's U.S. Patent No. 5,729,659, which was issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 17, 1998.
The legal team representing Potter is led by intellectual property attorneys Christopher Banys and Daniel Bedell from The Lanier Law Firm's office in Palo Alto, Calif.
"Apple's Siri and Google's Google Voice Actions make cell phones and other electronic devices much more useful for customers, but those products and others would never have been possible if not for the technology embodied in Potter's patent," says Mr. Banys. "The defendants have collected a fortune using Potter's technology, and we are asking the court for at least a reasonable royalty based on their unauthorized use."
The federal lawsuit includes claims of willful infringement against Cupertino, Calif-based Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), Japan-based Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), and Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT). Other defendants named in the lawsuit are Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG); Taiwan-based HTC Corp. and HTC America Inc.; South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America Inc.; Sony Mobile Communications AB and Sony Corp. of America; South Korea-based LG Electronics Inc. and LG Electronics Mobilecomm U.S.A. Inc.; Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola Solutions Inc. (NYSE: MSI) and Motorola Mobility Inc.; China-based ZTE Corp. and ZTE ( USA) Inc.; Japan-based Kyocera Corp.; Japan-based Sharp Corp. and Sharp Electronics Corp.; China-based Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Huawei America Inc.; Atlanta-based Pantech Wireless Inc.; Irving, Texas-based Research In Motion Limited (Nasdaq: RIMM) and Research In Motion Corp.; and Finland-based Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) and Nokia Inc. The case is Potter Voice Technologies LLC v. Apple Inc., et al., No: 1:12-cv-01096, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.
