The company gave no hints about a replacement for the iPhone 4S. Apple typically uses the WWDC to debut its latest phones, but broke with tradition last year to unveil iCloud.

True to form, Apple gave few product hints in the statement announcing WWDC, which will take place at San Francisco's Moscone Center in the four days through June 15. The tech giant, however, did promise a big focus on software.
"We have a great WWDC planned this year and can't wait to share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion with developers," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in the statement. "The iOS platform has created an entirely new industry with fantastic opportunities for developers across the country and around the world."After debuting the iPhone 4S last fall, there was speculation that Apple would unveil the iPhone 5 this summer. There has been talk that this could be pushed back until later in the year. It's rumored to be a 4G phone capable of running on high-speed networks from the likes of AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ). There may also be a larger size offered. Apple sold a huge number of iPhones during its fiscal second quarter, the company said yesterday. Despite rumors of an iPhone slowdown, Apple shipped a massive 35.1 million units, boosted by phenomenal growth in China. Although Apple's iPhone sales were down slightly from a record 37.03 million in the prior quarter, second-quarter sales of the smartphone constituted an 88% gain. Shares of Apple climbed $52.38, or 9.4%, to $612.66 today after fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue exceeded analysts' estimates. --Written by James Rogers in New York. >To follow the writer on Twitter, go to http://twitter.com/jamesjrogers. >To submit a news tip, send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
