DOJ May Sue Apple Over e-Book Pricing: Report

Responses from HarperCollins and Pearson have been added to this story.

CUPERTINO, Calif. ( TheStreet) -- Apple (AAPL - Get Report) may be sued by the Justice Department over alleged e-book price fixing, according to a Reuters report.

Citing two people familiar with the matter, Reuters reported that the Justice Department could sue Apple as early as Wednesday, as officials focus on deals with publishers dating back to Apple's initial iPad launch two years ago.

The Justice Department is investigating publishing heavyweights Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Pearson and Hachette Book Group, according to Reuters, which reported that settlements with some of the publishers could come as early as this week.

The Justice Department and three of the five publishing firms have not yet responded to TheStreet's request for comment on this story.

"Pearson has said for some time that it is cooperating fully with any investigation into this issue, however, we have no comment on reports relating to any such investigation," explained a Pearson spokesperson, in an email to TheStreet.

HarperCollins declined to comment.

Shares of Apple, which hit yet another new high on Tuesday, were up $7.62, or 1.21%, to $636.06 in premarket trading on Wednesday.
