Moviegoers Starving for 'The Hunger Games'
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Lions Gate Entertainment's (LGF) The Hunger Games is being released on Friday and moviegoers are expected to swarm theaters over the weekend.
The pending release of The Hunger Games helped shares of Lions Gate, the movie production company, hit a 52-week high Wednesday of $16.19.
The movie is already Fandango's best-selling "franchise opener and non-sequel" since the movie ticket and information firm began operating 12 years ago. As of Tuesday, about 2,000 movie showings were sold out already on Fandango and The Hunger Games made up 92% of Fandango's daily ticket sales.
Miller Tabak analysts anticipate the movie will make between $100 million and $110 million over its opening weekend. For comparison, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I made about $139.5 million its opening weekend, according to Entertainment Weekly.
