40 Future Innovators Head To Washington, D.C. To Compete For $630,000 In Prestigious Intel Science Talent Search

Forty high school seniors that are poised to be the nation’s next scientific leaders will be in Washington, D.C. from March 8-13 to compete for more than $630,000 in the Intel Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public.

Public Day – Public Exhibition of Projects:

Sunday, March 11, 1-4 p.m. ET

Finalists will be available for interviews and photos as they display, describe and answer questions about their award-winning research.
 

Awards Gala:

Tuesday, March 13, 6-9 p.m. ET
National Building Museum
401 F Street, NW
Washington, D.C.
 
Media are invited to attend the ceremony where all finalists will be honored and the top 10 winners will be announced, including for the top award of $100,000. Finalists will be available for in-person or phone interviews after 9 p.m.
 

WHO:

All 40 Intel Science Talent Search 2012 finalists. Of note, over the past 70 years Science Talent Search alumni have gone on to win seven Nobel Prizes, two Fields Medals, three National Medals of Science, 11 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships and even an Academy Award for Best Actress.

 
The 2012 finalists’ research projects include promising innovations in:

 

● Alternative energy solutions

 

● An inexpensive landmine detection system

 

● Cost-effective cancer therapies

 

● A potential treatment for muscular dystrophy

 

● New ways to remove contaminants from water

 

● Depression and anxiety treatment for adolescents

Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation, and Elizabeth Marincola, president of Society for Science & the Public, will be available for comment at both events.
 

Awards Gala:

Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute and acclaimed author and biographer, will address the finalists and awards gala attendees. Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini and Society for Science & the Public President Elizabeth Marincola will also speak and present the top awards.
