Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper Visits Niobrara Data Center Energy Park

DENVER, Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper spent the afternoon yesterday touring the future site of the Niobrara Energy Park, a renewable energy datacenter project located in Weld County, Colorado. The 644-acre project between Fort Collins and Cheyenne will combine clean fossil fuels, alternative energy, smart grid, energy storage, renewable energy, research, and cloud computing data centers. Its zoning plat was signed in August 2011, and the project is currently on the market for a single buyer or joint venture.

Governor Hickenlooper expressed enthusiasm about the project at the press conference following the site visit. "Technology is so dependent on energy, and here you've got all these different fiber-optic technology corridors going north and south, east and west, that intersect right here, but simultaneously we've also got not just natural gas and one of the highest-volume pipelines in America, which has an intersection here, but you've also got wind energy, solar energy, a confluence of every type of energy," said Governor Hickenlooper. "It really is a unique opportunity to have redundant energy to make sure that a strategically important data center is never at risk. I'm going to guess there is probably a handful of places like this in the entire country. We just have to figure out how to get it built."

Craig Harrison, founder and developer of Niobrara Energy Park, has collaborated with IDC Architects, a CH2M Hill company, to vision the project. "They claim they've only seen one other project like it in the country," Harrison stated. Tim Meier, president of IDC Architects has called the park "one of the first projects of its kind."

In addition to Governor Hickenlooper and his staff, the press conference and park tour were attended by four of the five Weld County commissioners. Senator Mark Udall also visited with Harrison in April 2011, calling the park "ahead of the curve" and referring to it as a private energy island. Located in Colorado's epicenter of numerous green-energy and clean-energy initiatives, Niobrara Energy Park has received widespread support from government officials, energy-industry leaders, researchers and many others.
