MapQuest Releases Native Mobile Mapping APIs For Android And Apple IOS
MapQuest, a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today launched the production release of the Android Maps API and the beta release of the Apple iOS Maps API.
“Once you see the full suite of features available and how easy they are to implement, we believe many mobile developers will find these APIs a great alternative to other native mobile mapping APIs.” Said VP-Product Vijay Bangaru.
Both APIs have been designed as "drop in" replacements for the current native mapping APIs. To easily switch over, simply integrate the MapQuest API instead of the native API. MapQuest mobile developers used the same object model as the native API and added new functionality such as integrated driving directions plus the ability to use free OpenStreetMap data or MapQuest licensed datasets.
Just like all of MapQuest’s APIs, the mapping APIs feature no preset limits on maps with the free Community Edition license. See the Terms Overview for a fuller explanation of MapQuest’s license options and limitations.
MapQuest has developed both the Android and Apple iOS Map APIs with a full set of samples to show off many of the great features available, which include: Android Maps API : -Advanced routing options and ability to display the route directly on the map -Built-in geocoding and reverse geocoding -Smooth animation when zooming/panning -Ability to rotate the map -Support of shape and image overlays Apple iOS Maps API Beta: -Advanced routing options and ability to display the route directly on the map -Reverse geocoding -Smooth animation when zooming/panning -Support of shape and image overlays For developers interested in using free OpenStreetMap data, simply don't pass a key and the API will automatically default to using OpenStreetMap data and services. Mobile mapping developers can easily replace the native API and get more features plus no preset limits on map transactions. In addition, MapQuest will feature the work from developers on their blog to help promote the mobile developer community.Select the service that is right for you!
