Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW), manufacturer of continuous power and infrastructure solutions, has been selected by a utility company for four of its high efficiency CleanSource 1000 kVA UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems. The utility deployed the critical backup power equipment at its datacenter facility in North America late last year to provide both power conditioning and protection to the mission critical site.
The customer set out to bring online one of the most energy efficient, highly resilient, and environmentally conscious data processing facilities in the industry. To accomplish this, the customer chose a 415 volt/240 volt power design instead of the North America standard 480 volt. This design approach eliminates voltage transformation at the power distribution unit level and the need for additional transformation equipment, resulting in significant improvements to overall datacenter energy efficiency.
To help meet design requirements, Active Power configured its CleanSource UPS to 415 volt and secured Underwriter Laboratories (UL) certification on the system. The system also underwent a shaker table test to meet stringent seismic code requirements due to the location of the datacenter.
“Energy efficiency was a key driver behind the customer’s decision to implement a 415 volt design as conditioned power is delivered at 240 volt directly to the server racks as opposed to having to transform multiple times in a conventional 480 volt design, potentially adding up to substantial energy losses,” said Martin Olsen, vice president and general manager at Active Power.“Active Power was excited to work with such an innovative customer and integrate our CleanSource UPS into their forward-thinking design,” continued Olsen. “The customer’s design maximizes the inherent benefits of our CleanSource UPS, particularly in terms of energy and space efficiency.” About Active Power Founded in 1992, Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW) designs and manufactures continuous power solutions and critical backup power systems that enable datacenters and other mission critical operations to remain ‘on’ 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
